Level 3 Tourism

Course Description

Tourism in Year 13 is a course designed for students planning a career in the tourism industry, or wishing to experience the world through travel. This course builds on, and develops the essential tourism industry skills and knowledge gained within the Year 12 Tourism course. These skills are highly relevant in the post-pandemic globally booming tourism industry.

This course focuses on gaining content knowledge of Australia and the South Pacific as visitor destinations. Students will also learn how to promote Rotorua as a New Zealand tourist destination. There is a possible four-day optional field trip to Rotorua to enrich students' understanding of Rotorua as a tourist destination.

Course organisers are looking into the possibility of offering one relevant Achievement Standard looking at how a tourist organisation can contribute to a sustainable future.


Course Overview

Term 1
Level 3 Tourism will begin with an reflective overview of skills and competencies covered in Year 12 Tourism (Tourist Characteristics and Needs, New Zealand as a Tourist Destination, Work roles in Tourism, World Tourist Destinations, the Business of Tourism, and the Social and Cultural impacts of tourism). We will then take a deep dive in one of our three Country/region focus units, "Australia as Tourist Destination."

Term 2
Term 2 will be dominated by our second country/region focus with a Unit on "Pacific Island countries as Visitor Destinations", but - for those students who wish to - work can begin on our Achievement Standard, likely Unit 90832, "Develop a strategy for an organisation that will contribute to a sustainable future".

Term 3
Term 3 will begin with our focus on "Rotorua as a tourist destination", with the Rotorua field trip planned for the 3rd or 4th week of Term 3. We will then continue with the Rotorua Assessment, looking at its key attractions and events, developing an itinerary for Rotorua, and then giving a fictional promotional speech on Rotorua for a Australian family audience. Time can also be spent on the new Achievement standard.

Term 4
Course-wise, Term 4 is left free for students to focus on external exams, but - if they have time - they can continue to catch up on assignments and Assessments. They might also use the time to attempt or hopefully complete the chosen Achievement Standard (again, likely Unit 90832, "Develop a strategy for an organisation that will contribute to a sustainable future".

Recommended Prior Learning

An interest in a career within New Zealand's top growth industry, the Tourism industry.

An interest in travel, people and places.

Priority will be given to students who have completed the Level 2 Tourism course.

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

Costs for the Rotorua Field trip,usually week 3 of the term3, is approximately $400.00.
We are grateful to families making voluntary payments to assist with course specific costs.

Credit Information

You will be assessed in this course through all or a selection of the standards listed below.
