Languages

When you learn a new language you learn to communicate, understand and appreciate your own and other cultures. Language learning opens your mind to a world of possibilities!

Language learning links us to our own past and heritage and languages play an important role in shaping our global community.

As students learn a language, they develop their understanding of the power of language. They discover new ways of learning, new ways of knowing and more about their own capabilities. They learn to take risks and develop their self-esteem as they reach out into the world.

Hutt Valley High School Languages Department teaches international capabilities. These capabilities are the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values that enable people to live, work and learn across national and cultural boundaries. We are proud to teach these intercultural competency skills through the wide range of languages we offer. These languages are: Spanish, French, Te Reo Maori, Japanese and Chinese Mandarin.

We offer trips to Spain, France and Japan every two years for senior students.  However, if the trip receives more applicants than available spots, priority will be given to students in Year 12 and Year 13.
