The aim of this practical course is to develop students' skills to the next level from their prior studies, and will deepen their musical appreciation, understanding and passion. Students will develop a level of confidence by engaging in opportunities to perform, compose, analyse and develop musical skill.
Performance skills - Students will develop practice on their chosen instrument and will build on their performance skills as a soloist and in a group. Students will gain five NCEA Level 1 credits from this part of the course.
Composition - Students will learn the fundamental skills of creating music by building a composition portfolio.
Musical contexts - Students will study set works from variety styles and develop their understanding of musical concepts and contexts.
Music skills - This area will look at building students' musicianship and skills through a number of practical tasks throughout the year. Music Technology skills will also be developed.
Prerequisites of this course are completion of Year 10 Music, or a good level of musical competency (at the discretion of the teacher in charge). It is expected that when students start this course, they will have chosen a major instrument and be in at least their third year of itinerant lesson on that instrument.
School assessments will be based on the following topics:
Identify and apply a range of music skills to complete a music activity
Show understanding of music in relation to contexts
Create an original composition by shaping musical ideas
Level 2 Music, Level 2 Music Performance
Contributions and Equipment/StationeryA 2B pencil, eraser and a clearfile, manuscript book.
