Level 2 Trades Academy

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Ms J. Allen

Students may apply for the Trades Academy course. This comprises attending 2 days at HVHS, 1 day of Workplace experience and 2 days attending WelTec Petone, Whitirea, or Papa Taiao in a Trades Skills course.

Students choose from:
- hospitality
- construction trades
- automotive and engineering
- sport and fitness
- hair and beauty salon support
- sustainability and young enterprise

There are approximately 40-45 Level 2 credits available;

Students will be placed in the Trades class and also select two further subjects. Trades is designed to complement the student’s course of study at the providers above (eg;Weltec) and aims to prepare them for life beyond high school.

The generic unit standards (listed below) will be completed during the year on an ongoing basis alongside the polytechnic standards the students complete relevant to their trade skills course (list above).

All students will have the opportunity to explore formal work experience placements.


Recommended Prior Learning

Students interested in the applying for the Trades Academy should have a reasonable attendance record and have ideally achieved their Level 1 Literacy and Numeracy. WelTec will conduct interviews and requires recommendations from HVHS Careers department and Deans.
