Level 3 Product Design Technology

13PTEC
Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr J. Norris.

Recommended Prior Learning

Reasonable success in Level 2 Materials Technology preferred. Students with other Level 2 credits will be considered at the discretion of the HOD.

This is a full year course in which students design and develop an innovative outcome based on a context of their choice and using mixed materials for the construction. It will be covering areas such as:

- Research and design

- Materials technology

- Electronics

- Complex workshop skills

- Computer Aided Design

The students investigate a context of their own choice and identify a need to address an issue for their major project. They then develop an outcome by researching materials, processes and manufacturing techniques to identify which ones best suit the environment that their product will be used in. During the construction the students will complete a log book identifying the workspaces, health and safety procedures and quality control methods that they are applying.

For their minor project, the students need to demonstrate that they can operate a CNC machine by producing a step by step plan explaining the process for setting up and operating the equipment.
