Course Description

While comparing Japan to New Zealand, intercultural competency skills are continually developed through various class discussions of cultural and social conventions. Throughout the year we cover topics such as: comparisons of the physical environment of New Zealand and Japan, tourism/travel and hospitality in Japan, work opportunities in Japan, current social issues and challenges facing Japan and youth culture. Students further develop their writing skills in the three main alphabets learning to read and write up to 150 Kanji. They will also practise listening, reading and speaking through varied communicative language activities.
Students are encouraged to complete two NCEA internals from the list below, but may do three NCEA internals if they would like to gain more credits. All students are required to enter the two NCEA Level 3 externals.
Students who have a high level of Japanese may sit scholarship and extra tutorials can be organised to assist those students.
Students have the opportunity to opportunity to interact with students from our sister school, Suginami High School, when they visit in March 2020. Year 13 students will also have the opportunity to apply for a long term exchange to Suginami High School, in May 2020.
Recommended Prior Learning
Reasonable success in Level 2 Japanese, or at the discretion of the HOD.

Only students engaged in learning and achievement derived from Te Marautanga o Aotearoa are eligible to be awarded these subjects as part of the requirement for 14 credits in each of three subjects.
